With the consent of his chapter, Robertus ecclesie sancte Marie de Latina in Iherusalem abbas approves under seal the sale made by the nobilis vir Iohannes Griffus, with the agreement of his wife Maria, in the burgess court of Acre [in curia Acconensi] to frater Lutolfus preceptor et locum magistri tenens and the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans of a pecia terre situated near Acre. Iohannes Griffus and his wife held the land from St Mary of the Latins for an annual rent of 5 gold Saracen besants. The land is bounded on the east by the vineyard of Michael de Ierusalem, on the west by the garden of Pandolfus, on the south partly by the garden of the Knights Templar [355] and partly by the garden of Andreas de Wienna, and on the north by the garden of dominus Rollandus. Its entrance is from the public way before the garden of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. With the consent of his chapter and for the support of the lepers and others, Petrus Cesariensis archiepiscopus makes a sealed eleemosynary grant to the leprosary of St Lazarus of Jerusalem, the magister of which is Rainaldus de Floriato. He gives the house and church of Sanctus Laurentius de Painperdu, situated in the territory of Caesarea, on condition that due obedience is owed to the archbishop, saving the Order’s rule. In recognition of his ordinary jurisdiction, Each year St Lazarus will provide 8 candles [cerei] of 4 rotulae of wax each to the cathedral of St Peter of Caesarea. The domus Hospitalis Sancti Thome martiris Acconensis had been founded in Acre by an eleemosynary grant of King Richard I of England, but the king died before its house could be adequately established and the canons had been reduced to a sad state, living under the Rule of the Hospital of St Mary of Germans. Writing to the magister and brothers, Pope Gregory IX confirms the actions of the bishop of Winchester who, with the advice of the patriarch of Jerusalem and albeit illegitimately, found a better residence for the canons and reformed their way of life. At the request of Geraut Oliuer consele des Marsseiles en Accre and Reymond de Conches, who, representing the commune of Marseilles, the people of Montpellier and other Provençaux, came into his presence and that of his court, Henry, par la grace de deu Roi de Chypre, confirms for these merchants that they need pay dues of only 4 per cent on merchandise they bring from Europe [outremer] and sell, and that they can take out any goods they do not sell without payment of dues. They should pay the full tax on goods they buy in Cyprus. Should they bring merchandise from Konya [la terre de sultan de Come] or from lands on this side of the sea, they should only pay 4 per cent on goods they sell in Cyprus. If they take out goods they have not sold, they should pay 1 besant for each quintar of alum, 2 besants on each quintar of wool [laine], 1 per cent [356] on timber [?boquines], half a besant on each rote of silk and 1 per cent on rolls [draps] of silk and all other merchandise.
