Guiccardus abbas ecclesie sancte Marie de Latina in Ierusalem and his chapter confirm under seal the sale by Giot and Iohan, the sons of Michael de Jerusalem, of a vineyard to frater Lutolfus and the convent of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans for 700 Saracen besants. Iohannes had held the vineyard from the abbey of St Mary of the Latins for a rent of 13 Saracen besants, payable each year on the Feast of All Saints. The Hospital of St Mary will now pay the same rent to the abbey. On the east is the vineyard that belonged to Iohannes de Conche. On the west is the garden of dominus Rollandus miles. On the south is the garden of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans and on the north is the public way. The vineyard cannot be alienated to milites, the sons of milites, religious communities or the members of [merchant] communes, and the abbey retains preemption rights. Dec. 25 1238 - Dec. 24 1239. text: Dec. 1-31. Nicosia. Henry, Dei gratia rex Cipri, issues a sealed confirmation of the eleemosynary grant to the church of Nicosia, which had been made to benefit the soul of his great uncle Guy, king of Jerusalem and lord of Cyprus, at the time of his death. The grant was of a rent of 100 white besants a year, to be drawn from the revenues of the brick kiln [testaria] in the city of Nicosia. If the rent failed, the sum was to be made up from other revenues in the kingdom of Cyprus. It is payable each year in 4 instalments of 25 besants each. It also includes rents of 60 modii of wheat, to be paid each August, and 50 metrae of wine, to be paid each November. The assisiae of wheat and wine are to be delivered to the house of the priest instituted in the church of Nicosia by the archbishop, who is bound to provide such a priest to celebrate the divine office for Guy’s soul perpetually. With the agreement of his wife domina Aeliz and his sons, Johannes de Ibelino dominus de Arsur makes a sealed eleemosynary grant, masking a sale, to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, represented by frater Petrus de Veteri Brivata domus Hospitalis Jerosolimitani magister. The Order already owns half of the mills of Tres Pontes. Johannes now gives the other half, together with the island adjoining them, which is situated between them and Vetus Pons, over which runs the road to Arsur. The land extends as far as the large stream called Jorgilra that flows below the hill [turon] called filie de Comar and then as far as the Vetus Pons, where a boundary between the land of the Hospital of St John and that of the lord of Arsur is marked. The other boundary runs from the mills to another stream flowing from Jorgilia. In return the magister and brothers of the Hospital of St John give Johannes 3000 besants. He takes the monastery of Mt Sinai under papal protection, confirming its possessions. He specifies Mt Sinai and the monastery of St Mary at its foot; the places [loca] called Roboe, Fucra, Luach and Rayton with its palm trees and lands; in the city of Egypt [Cairo] houses and a casale outside the city; 10 miliaria terrae next to the Red Sea; Faran with lands and palm trees; in Alexandria the obedientia Sancti Michaelis and freedom [of movement] by sea or land; vineyards and olive groves in the Vallis Moysi; houses, mills, vineyards and olive groves at Mons Regalis; houses, vineyards and olive groves at Croce Montis Regalis; a hospital [hospitale] and the obedientia Sancti Moysi, houses and an oven in the city of Jerusalem; houses and lands at Jaffa; the obedientia Sanctae Catarinae in Acre; the church of St George and houses in Damascus, and outside the city 3 virgulta; the hospitale Sancti Demetrii and 3 casalia with villani at Latakia; houses, lands and vineyards in the place called Odaue-rose; houses and an oven at Antioch; on the island of Cyprus houses, other estates and a [rent] of 1 libra aura from the revenues of the comercium. Stressing that [lay] rights to ecclesiastical benefices or cemeteries are uncanonical, he nevertheless permits those already held to remain with the bishop’s licence.
