He confirms that the abbey is under papal protection and that it follows the Augustinian Rule. He confirms an agreement on tithes covering all Judaea and Jerusalem and a union [of prayer] involving the churches of Jerusalem, including the abbey of the Mt of Olives and the church of St John of Sebastea, Sanctus Helyas and Hebron with churches in Sicily, Apulia and Calabria, and arranged by Patriarch William of Jerusalem with the agreement of the chapter of the Holy Sepulchre. He confirms the abbey’s right to bury those who wish burial in its cemeteries; the prohibition of the celebration of Mass in the abbey’s churches without its licence; its freedom from tithes on noval lands; the right of sanctuary; the right to celebrate services in times of interdict; the right of the brothers to preach publicly; the right to approach any bishop for chrism, holy oils and consecrations; the privilege of exemption from episcopal jurisdiction; freedom of election of abbots; jurisidictional dependence on the Holy See; the use of Mt Sion as a stational church for the patriarch on the feasts commemorating the Last Supper, Pentecost and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, provided no heavy burdens are laid on Mt Sion such as the establishment of the cathedra [for patriarchal judgements] or the provision of a meal. †Mar. 19. Out of sympathy for Bishop R. and the canons there he makes a sealed eleemosynary grant, giving them an annual rent of 60 librae of Provins, to be drawn from the revenues of Troyes, and a house in that city which the canons can occupy. He frees the canons from the payment of dues.
