text: Jan. 1-31. Gaufredus de Donjon sancte domus Hospitalis Christi pauperum magister Hospitalis with the unanimous assent of all the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, including the chapter, makes a sealed grant, restoring to the church of Valenia [ecclesia Valaniensis] and its bishop Anterius the right to take all those tithes of the lordship of Margattum that it was accustomed to enjoy in the time of the late dominus Rainaldus, with some exceptions. The church will have full tithes from casalia and their produce, carragia and rents; half tithes on the returns of poultry, eggs and cheese; whole tithes on the returns from the funda, platea, dyeworks and other revenues of Margatum. Full tithes will also be paid on the revenues of mills, except for the Order’s milling; half tithes on produce sold from gardens in which the Order has worked with its own labour and and at its own expense, but if any garden be rented out, full tithes will be paid. Half tithes will be paid on oil, but if the olive groves are rented out whole tithes will be due. Half tithes will be paid on carrucae and vineyards worked directly by the Hospital. Whole tithes will be due from the port, as in the days of lord Rainald, on grape juice [must] and wine, sumach, almonds and figs, jars, pots and pitchers. 15 Antiochene besants a year will be paid in place of tithes on the oven, unless it needs to be repaired, when tithes will be reduced while it is out of use. On five feasts - Easter, Pentecost, the Nativity of St John the Baptist, the Assumption of St Mary and All Saints - the Suriani and Armeni outside the town [suburbii], who have donkeys, will bring 10 somae of myrtle [mirtus] to the church of Valenia, which will enjoy freedom in all things as in the days of dominus Reinaldus. Mindful of the assistance of Genoa in the conquest of the land of Jerusalem and its aid to him and his predecessors, Henricus de Trecis comes pallatinus et Terre Hierusalem domnus and his wife Isabella regis Amalrici filia make a sealed grant, confirming the commune of Genoa in its possessions in Acre and other maritime cities. They specify a church, the right to use weights and measures [cantaria et pondera et mensurae], an oven, a bath house, a stall [bancus] on which the Genoese can sell each other meat, and a rua with houses and properties in Acre and in all the maritime cities of the kingdom, and the right to come and go, sell and buy without payment of dues. In return for the part Genoa played in the relief of Jaffa they give a casale on the plain of Jaffa called Deldoc with all its rustici and a rent [in assisa] of 400 Saracen besants assigned on the fundum of Jaffa, payable in 4 instalments. If this rent fails it will be made up from other rents in or outside Jaffa and Acre. Challengers to these gifts will be excommunicated as is conceded by Patriarch Conradus of Jerusalem and Ioscus archiepiscopus Tirensis. Mindful of the magnificent contribution the city of Genoa made to the liberation of the eastern regions, the defence of Tyre and the siege of Acre, and with the consent of his wife domna Ysabella regis Amalrici filia, Henricus Trecensium comes palatinus makes a sealed grant to the Genoese commune of Tyre, represented by Nicholaus Cartofigus and Vgo Lercarius Ianuensium consules. He gives the Genoese a free curia in the city of Tyre, freedom to come and go by sea or land, to buy and sell in the funda of Tyre, but on the following condition. If the Genoese come by sea to Tyre in the kingdom of Jerusalem from the land of the Sarraceni, Barbary [Barbaria] or Egypt, or if they come by sea to Tyre from Constantinople by way of the land of the Sarraceni, or come by land from the territory of the Sarraceni, they will pay dues [consuetudines] on the merchandise they sell, but will be exempted from dues on merchandise they do not sell. They are confirmed in their freedom from prosecution for any crime except homicide, theft and rape, and from imprisonment. Henricus confirms for the Genoese their freedom to use their own weights and measures [cantarii, buzae et modii] in Tyre. He confirms their possession of casale Sancti Georgii, Oraca, a large garden belonging to the queen and small gardens situated under the castelletum and within the city wall near the castellum, and a large mill that belonged to the king; the bath house before the house of Fulco de Falesia, in which both men and women bathe, the oven in the burgus novus with a volta adjacent to it, a macellum with 3 houses, a platea that stretches as far as the house of Habraha piscator, and all the houses in 2 insulae which are in front of the macellum, extending on one side as far as the house of Theobaldus aurifex and on the other to the house of magister Petrus Ianuensis, as contained in the charter from Count Raymond [III] of Tripoli; a third part of the proceeds of the cathena of Tyre, after expenses have been deducted; and the house of Opicio Lumbardus situated over the port of Tyre, which is bounded by the house of Obertus de Sandala, the house of Gandulfus Saonensis, the public way and a private road [via privata], together with all the houses and tenement held by Opicius behind his house and beyond the private road.
