Aimery, Dei gratia rex Cipri et regni Jerosolymitani comestabulus, makes a sealed grant to Joscius Tyrensis archiepiscopus, giving him the casale in Cyprus called Levadi/Livardi/Livadi for his lifetime with all its rights and villani, as were previously held by Minas turcopulus. He gives the archbishop the right to all the produce and the freedom to export it without any exaction. After the death of Joscius the casale will pass to his nephew Simon and after Simon’s death to the church of Tyre. [257] Bohemond, the son of Prince Bohemond of Antioch, Dei gratia Tripolis comes, records an agreement with Matheus Minchet vicecomes Pisanorum Tripoli, and Gandulfus, Bandinus and Ugo, emissaries [nuncii] of the consules of the Pisans in Acre. Petrus Tripolis episcopus had challenged the rights of free entry and departure with merchandise from Tripoli and the exemption of a third part of terciaria. The Pisans had claimed that the count had no rights in the funda of the Pisans in Tripoli or over the entry or departure from Tripoli with merchandise. Bohemond confirms that the Pisans already had these rights and receives in exchange a gift of 500 Saracen besants. He adds the following gifts: the right to take a rotula of sugar each day from the sugar press [masarium] in his casale called Fiergio for the needs of the sick in the hospital; in Casale Vmberti and his other casalia in the region of Acre the right to take each year 1 clicha of wheat and 1 clicha of barley from every worked carruca, to be provided by the rustici; 5 carrublae paid by the rustici for every 100 goats wintering in Aimery’s land, and 2 out of the 10 carrublae which Aimery levies for every 10 goats; 3 karrublae provided by the rustici for every carrucata owing Aimery 2 besants. He gives the Hospital of St John, frater Gaufridus de Donjon Hospitalis magister and the brothers an annual rent of 1000 besants, freed from all servicium, to be taken from his assisia of 4000 besants, drawn from the cathena Aconis, which he holds of the king of Jerusalem. He gives the tower over the Gate of St Nicholas at Acre, but the brothers are to have no rights over the Gate, which is an entrance to the city, nor can they make new exactions or dispose of the tower by gift, sale or pledge. If their Order is absorbed into another, they must surrender the tower to the crown, and they must also surrender it if the needs of war or other necessity demand, although it will be returned to them once the crisis is over. Bohemond has given this rent to the Hospital of St John in repayment of the debt of 37000 Saracen besants owed by Count Raymond [III] of Tripoli, for which the assisia of 4000 Saracen besants held by Bohemond had been pledged, with the agreement of previous kings of Jerusalem.
