In return for service from 24 Jun. to 15 Aug. the Venetians will receive a church, a market place [platea convenientia ad forum] and immunity from dues on commerce in every city by the sea or inland that the Franks [Francigenae] have taken or will take. The spoil, gathered from every city which is taken jointly, will be divided, with one-third going to the Venetians and two-thirds to the Franks [Francigenae]. If Tripoli should fall, the spoil shall be equally divided with half going to St Mark, unless the Venetians surrender part to Jerusalem each year in recognition of its sanctity. comments: [5] Mayer (UKJ 1:117-18 and in Bistümer, pp. 258-87) has argued at length against any endowment by Godfrey and the establishment by him of a Benedictine community in the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There are reasons – particularly Patriarch Arnulf’s charter of Apr. 6 – Dec. 24 1112 – for questioning the foundation of the Benedictine abbey at such an early date, but the prestigious nature of the shrine and the burial of Garnier of Grez in late July in valle Iosaphat, in porticu basilice sancte Marie virginis et matris Iesu Christi (Albert of Aachen, p. 516) suggests that there was some monastic presence on the site during Godfrey’s lifetime.
