text: Jun./Jul. 1109 – Nov. 30 1110. Bertrand, inclitus comes [Tripolitanus], son of Raymond of St Gilles, had made an eleemosynary grant, to benefit the soul of his relation William Jordan [count of Cerdagne], in the presence of King Baldwin I of Jerusalem, the archiepiscopus Albariensis and Arnulfus archidiaconus and other good men. He had made this to the church of the Holy Sepulchre which is situated in the castle [castrum] of Mont Pèlerin and was represented by Johannes, who was prior of the same church. Bertrand had given 3 casalia: Abdin/Addin, Babela/Habela, and Beniharan/Beniaran, but he had unjustly taken the casalia back into his hands. When Arnaldus, elected prior of the church on Mont Pèlerin by the chapter of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, demanded the return of the casalia, Bertrand, together with his son Pontius acknowledged his guilt. By an eleemosynary grant he returns them to the church. He confirms the gifts made to the church of the Holy Sepulchre on Mont Pèlerin by his father, Count Raymond of St Gilles, and his cousin William Jordan and in addition gives Arnaldus prior a good horse and the best mule that can be found. If Bertrand or Pontius fail in this commitment they will be subjected to excommunication by the patriarch of Jerusalem, the bishop of Tripoli, the archbishop of Apamea [Femia] and the bishop of Béziers. Gibelin, episcopus ad orientales ecclesias ab apostolica sede directus, arbitrates, with the advice of the bishops, abbots and Arnulfus Iherosolimitani archydiaconus, and with the assent and at the petition of Baldwin, domnus gloriosissimus rex and his leading subjects, in a dispute between the bishop of Nazareth and the abbot of Mt Tabor over ecclesiastical dignities. The right to ordain the abbots and monks and consecrate the greater church on Mt Tabor will belong for ever to the patriarch of Jerusalem. Other episcopal rights – such as the consecration of chrism and oil and the making of parochial appointments [parrochyalem vicarium] – pertain to the bishop of Nazareth. A third part of all tithes of the region of Tiberias – as much from the knights [de militia] as from land and fodder – will, with the agreement of the bishop and his clergy, be enjoyed by the church of Mt Tabor in perpetuity in order to feed the monks. If the monks should acquire the lands held at present by pilgrim knights [peregrini milites], two-thirds of the tithes are to go to the bishop, a third to the monks. Yihye, a Jew from Acre now living in Egypt, to ask the Nagid [Mevorakh b. Seʿadya, the head of Egypt’s Jews] to recommend him to the qahal (community) of Acre. He relates that he has reprimanded the Jewish [purple] shell [mahārin] gatherers from Alexandria for drinking beer in Acre’s taverns, and mentions that the ‘uncircumcised’ [the Latins] do not allow the Jews to practice ritual slaughter. Hugo, abbot of St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat, establishes a hospital next to the abbey for the poor and pilgrims, dedicated to St Saviour, funded by a tithe on all St Mary’s goods and supported by a confraternity, the members of which share in the abbey’s prayers and merits. It will feed 13 poor persons on every Feastday of the Apostles and whenever a confrater dies. Another poor person will be fed each day for thirteen days after such a death and on the anniversary each year. Each confrater will provide an eleemosynary subscription of 13 besants a year.
