Patriarch William of Jerusalem, with the agreement of the community [conventus] at the Holy Sepulchre, licences under seal Galterus de Lucia to sell his house to Robertus Medicus and his sons and daughters for 80 besants. Galterus de Lucia built this house on land at the western corner of the lacus Balneorum, extending [vergens] to the north. Because the house’s foundations are so unstable that it cannot be heightened, Patriarch William, with the agreement of the chapter of the Holy Sepulchre, permits Robertus Medicus to construct a vault over the road that runs between the house and the patriarch’s square [campus] and to build on it. He also pledges [in vadimonium] to Robertus some wasteland at the corner of the house so that the house can be extended. Robertus will pay the patriarchal curia 1 besant a year on 15 July [in festivitate Ierusalem] for the house and the additional land. Patriarch William of Jerusalem confirms with his seal in favour of Petrus ęcclesię Sepulcri Domini prior and the canons of the Holy Sepulchre the Rule of life constituted by Patriarch Arnulf and everything that they have been given in the Levant and in Europe. He specifies the following: half the oblations to the Holy Sepulchre; two thirds of the money for lights, with the other third going to the patriarch; oblations to the relic of the True Cross, except for those on Good Friday, when they go the patriarch; the tithes of the city of Jerusalem and the lands adjacent to it, except for the tithes from the funda, which belong to the patriarch; half of everything King Baldwin I handed over in an exchange relating to the bishopric of Bethlehem; the church of St Peter in the city of Jaffa; the church of Sanctus Lazarus [at Bethany] and the 4 casalia of Benehatiᶒ, Benehabeth, Ragabam and Roma, which were given by King Baldwin I; the villani and their families given by the same king; the church at Quarantena, which had belonged to the patriarch; all the ovens in Jerusalem given by Duke [dux] Godfrey [of Bouillon], except for two which were transferred to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem for the use of the poor and one which was transferred to the abbey of St Mary of the Latins; all the casalia given to the Holy Sepulchre by Duke Godfrey and confirmed in a charter from King Baldwin I; 4 casalia, called Gith, Capharruth, Crefesilta and Porphiria, which were given by Rogerius Ramathesis episcopus. Fulk, dei gratia rex Iherusalem Latinorum tercius, together with Queen Melisende his wife, makes a sealed eleemosynary grant to Patriarch William of Jerusalem, Petrus Sepulcri Domini prior and all the brothers of the chapter of the Holy Sepulchre: Robertus archidiaconus; Anselmus precentor; Godefridus thesaurarius; Wlgrinus praepositus; Petrus Bernardi; Girbertus; Goisbertus; Obertus; Robertus; Petrus elemosinarius; Petrus camerarius; Lambertus; Aimericus; Petrus; Giraldus; Anscherius/Anschericus; Eurardus; Burchardus; Willelmus Podiensis; Willelmus Beritensis and the rest of the convent. Fulk and Melisende have obtained the church of Sanctus Lazarus in Bethania in order to found a community of monks or nuns, who will serve there in subjection to the Holy Sepulchre and the patriarch. Fulk and Melisende confirm the possessions, villani and Beduini outside and within Jerusalem that were already given by the patriarch, Petrus prior and the canons of the Holy Sepulchre and were attached to the church of Sanctus Lazarus, including the casalia of Benehatiᶒ, Benehabeth, Ragabam and Roma and freedom from the payment of tithes. Fulk and Melisende, with the agreement of their son Balduinus, the assent of Patriarch William and the confirmation of their barones, give a casale called Thecua, with all the lands, villani and Beduini that have been attached to the casale from the time of the siege of Antioch [in 1098] to the present day. Fulk and Melisende add that the inhabitants [habitatores] of Thecua can continue their custom of freely gathering bitumen, called cathrans in the vulgar tongue, and salt from the Dead Sea [Mortuum Mare].
