Baldwin, per gratiam dei in sancta Hierusalem Latinorum rex quartus, with the agreement of his mother Queen Melisende and his brother Amalricus comes Ascalonitanus, confirms under seal the gift made by Humfredus de Torono constabularius regis to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, in the service of Christ’s poor. With the agreement of his son Humfredus and his daughters, and of Gualterius Berythensis, in whose feodum it had been, and of Gualterius’s brothers Guido and Bernard, Humfredus de Torono gave half of the castellum of Paneas. Humfredus also gave the Hospital half of Castellum Novum, houses belonging to domna Albereha de Torono, 2 vineyards in the territory of Toron, which Guido de Scandalione had given, and a hospitale in Toron. text: Before Nov. 13. The Knights Templar write to Pope Adrian IV, reporting events in the Holy Land. The son of Sanguineus [Nur ad-Din, son of Zengi] besieged Bellinas with a large army and defeated King B[aldwin III] and the Knights Templar. B[ertrandus] magister and 87 Templar brothers were captured. 300 other milites, who were with them, were killed after capture. Large quantities of horses and arms were lost. King Baldwin, together with T[heodericus] Flandriae comes and Rainaldus de Sancto Walerico, collected an army, counter-attacked and relieved Bellinas. The Templars surprised 230 pagani, who were attending a wedding, and killed or captured them. The pope praises the Templars and encourages the archbishop of Reims to recruit suitable men to go to the aid of the Holy Land or to provide horses and arms. Before Nov. 13. The Knights Templar write to Pope Adrian IV, reporting events in the Holy Land. comments: [76] This letter and the next cannot date from before Fulcher of Angoulême’s fruitless trip to Italy to appeal to Pope Adrian IV about the dispute he and the Holy Sepulchre had with the Hospitallers of St John. text: Dec. 25 1156 - Nov. 20 1157. In the presence of Queen Melisende, agreement is reached on an exchange between the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem and Joeta abbatissa S. Lazari Betanie. Raimundus magister Hospitalis, with the consent of all the brothers of his chapter, cleric or lay, gives the abbess and nuns of St Lazarus all the tithe the Hospital had in the casale of Bethaanina in exchange for a vineyard that is bordered on the east by a vineyard belonging to the Hospital, on the south by a vineyard belonging to St. Anne, on the north by the road that goes to Nablus as far as the crossroads [bivium] of S. Stephanus. The vineyard is granted by Joeta with the consent of all the nuns and chapter of St Lazarus. Avis abbatissa Sancte Marie Grandis, with the consent of her nuns, in particular Odulina, Sole [Solis] and Gaudelena, grants the Hospital of St John half the tithe she took on the vineyard, in the presence of Petrus de Sancto Lazaro, Lambertus Cambiator and Stephanus Umbertus. Sebilia abbatissa Sancte Anne, with the consent of Ermengardis and Gilia and her other nuns, grants the Hospital the other half the tithe she took on the vineyard, in the presence of Radulfus de Sancto Petro, Willelmus Ebraldi and Amisarnus Carnifex. Agreement on an exchange between Rogerius Clericus and the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, represented by Amoramus thesaurarius and Willelmus de Bellomonte, and with the consent of Geraldus Ugonis preceptor Hospitalis. Rogerius gives small houses [medias domos] situated next to the voltae of the Hospital in ruga Sancti Stephani, before which the new stationes of the Holy Sepulchre stand. These houses were left to Rogerius by his mother Fraxenda when she died. They are given in exchange for the house of Goffridus de Karitate which is situated in ruga Coquinati, bordering on the house of Pons Gaanna, which is behind it, the house of Willelmus Palmerius which is to the right and is in ascensu ruge Parmenteriorum, and the house of Aimericus Guittardus de Maumeria, which is to the left. The agreement is sealed with the seal of the Hospital.
