Baldwin, per dei gratiam in sancta civitate Ierusalem Latinorum rex sextus, confirms under seal the leasing to his uncle and senescalcus Ioscelinus Edessani comitis filius by Hugo iuvenis the son of Hugo Bibliensis, with the agreement of his wife Stephania, of the Terra de Sancto Georgio and the wardship of the sons [baiulatio puerorum] of Ada Bethsamitis for 7 years on the annual payment in rent [censualiter] of 600 besants, payable in August. Ioscelinus, who makes a down payment to Hugo of 1300 besants, will enjoy all the fruits and revenues, but will render to the king the servicium owed for the property. All forfeits imposed judicially in the period will be shared with Hugo. If Hugo and his wife wish to establish a mansio in the territory during the period, the land needed for this should be returned to him. If Ioscelinus should supply the rustici with anything that belongs to him, it should be returned once the lease is ended. text: Dec. 25 1178 - Dec. 24 1179. [161] Constancia, daughter of King Louis VI of France, sister of King Louis VII of France and S. Egidii comitissa, is admitted in common chapter by magister R. de Molinis as a consoror of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. She chooses to be buried in the Order’s cemetery. She makes a sealed eleemosynary gift to the Hospital and the poor of the casale of Betheras on the plain of Ascalon, which she had bought with all its rights. She imposes the condition that while she remains in the East the Order will give her 500 besants a year, payable on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. If she should return to the West, the Order will provide her, in place of the 500 besants, with 12 and half marks in unadulterated silver of Troyes weight, payable each Pentecost in the Hospital’s chapter, meeting at Quierzy [Ceresers] or elsewhere. After her death the Order will bury her as a consoror and commemorate her obit every year. Henry, count palatine of Troyes, having visited the church of the abbey of St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat and in consideration of the holiness of the place and the monks’ devotion, makes a sealed grant, giving the abbey an annual rent of 10 livres, which he will assign on his return from the East. Should he die in the interim, he instructs his wife, son and guardians of his land to fulfil his wishes. He declares that everything the abbey shall acquire will be held freely, with the right to dispose of property should it so wish. With the agreement of his wife Stephania, Nicholaus Manzur has sold for 300 besants to magister Rogerius de Molinis and the brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem a rent [censuales] of 20 besants, which he has received each year from the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem [represented by dominus] [163] Helanus parmentarius for some land with a vineyard, which is next to the road that goes to Bethlehem, is bordered on the south by the land of Greek nuns and the Armenians of St James, on the east by the old road which goes to the lacus patriarche, on the north by the cemetery of the Holy Sepulchre. It stretches as far as a cistern belonging to Nicholaus. In future the Hospitallers are to hold the land freely. The sale has been confirmed by Nicholaus and Stephania in the curia, in the presence of King Baldwin IV. It is approved by the royal castellan and at the castellan’s orders Robertus de Rancheni, acting for the king in such sales, has accepted 2 besants and 2 solidi.
