comments: [214] Grandclaude (‘Liste’, pp. 340-1), suggested that this assise could not be earlier than 1177, when no one was considering three candidates for the hand of Sibylla of Jerusalem (William of Tyre, pp. 977-81). On the other hand, it must certainly have been in force by the reign of King Aimery, because of his disapproval of the marriage of Beatrice of Courtenay (Lignages d’Outremer, p. 69) and because it is treated at length in the Livre au roi. [215] Grandclaude (‘Liste’, p. 344) lists two other assises, but the use of the term ‘serfs’ in the first – a word very rarely used on the mainland – suggests that this may have been Cypriot legislation, perhaps even of the fourteenth century, (‘Assises de la Baisse Court’, pp. 226-7) and the reference by John of Ibelin (p. 186) to an ‘assise ou usage’ concerning lost property suggests that he was not sure that there was an assise on this subject, as opposed to custom.

text: †Oct. 16 1180 - Jul. 2 1187. Patriarch Eraclius of Jerusalem addresses a general letter to all Christians. He expatiates on the threat to the Holy Land from Turci, Arabi, Alarabi, Sarraceni and pseudochristiani. He promises remission of sins for those who come to its aid and a third part of enjoined penance to those who contribute horses, mules and arms. Those who become confratres of [the churches of] Antioch, Latakia [Licana], Jubila, Valenia, Tortosa, Tripoli, Ibielita, Beirut, [S]arbona, Tyre, Nazareth, Sebastea, Bethlehem, Mons Regalis, Ramla, Caesarea, Acre and Tiberias will each get an indulgence of 40 days. Over and above this a confrater of the church of Jerusalem, who pays an annual census, will have a fourth part of his penance remitted, can be buried even in time of interdict, will be commemorated annually as an individual, and generally on the third day after the Feast of All Saints. The indulgence can benefit dead relations. Those unable physically to make the pilgrimage to Jerusalem can fulfil their vows at Holy Sepulchre houses in Europe, †Oct. 16 1180 - Jul. 2 1187. Amalricus vicecomes Neapolis records under seal the ending of a long dispute between him and the abbey of St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat over the boundaries of land, which is above Kafrecos. With the agreement of his wife Theophania he orders and assents to a drawing of the boundaries by 3 probi homines of Nablus, dominus Bernardus Pelliparius, dominus Wido de Escar and dominus Georgius Cambitor. The boundary [divisiones et metae] is marked as follows. It runs below the wall of the vineyard of Basinus to the vineyard of Gilelmus Brito and then by marks, set on the hillside to the cavea Medequen and the vineyard already named, descending as far as the mills. Amalricus surrenders all the land within the boundaries on the eastern side as far as ima Vallis Abrahae.
