Guy, per dei gratiam in sancta civitate Ierusalem Latinorum rex VIIIus, his wife the Lady Queen Sibylla make a sealed eleemosynary grant to the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans, represented by magister Sibrandus, who founded this hospital during the siege of Acre. They give a house in Acre which had been a hospice for Armenians and patrones, [230] out of which can be established a hospital. If the gift of the house proves to be impossible, Guy and Sibylla will give the platea next door, where a hospital can be built. They also give 4 carrucate terre in the territory of Acre. Witnesses: Comes Ioscelinus regis senescalcus; Anzellinus regis constabularius; Henfridus Montis Regalis; Hugo Tyberiadis; Rainaldus Sydonis; Gaufridus Tortus. text: Oct. 12. Baldewinus Cantuariensis archiepiscopus informs Prior Osbert and the convent of Christ Church Canterbury that he and his companions reached Tyre safely on 16 September. They were then delayed for nearly a month by illness among the archbishop’s entourage and reached the Christian siege camp at Acre on 16 October. The archbishop has heard the the kings of England and France are expected soon. Oct. 12. text: Oct. 21. The chaplain [capellanus] of the archbishop of Canterbury writes to the convent of Christ Church Canterbury. The archbishop reached Tyre on 16 September and travelled to Acre. He found the Christian army in a dreadful state, torn by disputes and featuring poor moral behaviour, while hemmed in and under attack from the Turci. Saladin’s potency grows while Christian power dimishes. On 8 January the Turks killed 4000 Christian foot soldiers. Other deaths include those of the queen of Jerusalem, comes Stephanus frater archiepiscopi Remensis, comes Barensis nepos archiepiscopi Remensis, comes de Ferreres frater comitis de Clara, Bernardus junior de Sanwaleri and Randulfus de Glanvilla. Clarembaudus de Noiers, who is unwell but of sound mind, addresses H. bishop of Auxerre, his mother Adeline, his wife Ada, his son Milo, his daughter Adeline and all Christians who read this letter. He makes a sealed eleemosynary grant to the Hospital of Arbonne and frater Stephanus de Corbolio. He gives a rent of 100 solidi from his land at Noiers. This he does with the agreement of the chapter of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem and frater Ogerus hospitalis Iherosolimitani magnus preceptor. Witnesses: frater Ogerus domus Hospitalis Iherosolilitanus magnus preceptor; frater Galterus de Braholget; frater Stephanus de Corbolio, who had been appointed to the commandery [domus] for his lifetime by the chapter of Jerusalem; frater Robertus de Lain; frater Petrus de Ate; Stephanus li Bories de Petra Pertuis, a relative of Clarembaudus; dominus Boves d’Estables; dominus Garnerus de Creato, Montis Regalis dominus; Humbertus d’Argentoil; and others. comments: [232] A letter from Pope Innocent III [dated probably 10-31 May 1199] reveals that the papal curia had concluded that the marriages of Queen Isabella to Conrad of Montferrat and later to Henry of Champagne had been illegitimate. (Innocent III, Die Register 2 :128-9, no. 72). The sentiment in the Christian camp before Acre at the forcible separation of Isabella and Humphrey was conveyed in evidence given in October 1213 to a commission chaired by Cardinal Robert of Courçon by the following witnesses, who had been present: Guido de Dampetra; Odardus marescallus Campaniae; Guido de Capis; Petrus Turkinus; Willelmus comes Jonviniacensis; Hugo de sancto Mauritio; Robertus de Miliaco; Rogerius de Sancto Karauno; and Lambertus de Barro.
