text: May 8. Lateran. Pope Celestine III writes to the Valaniensis episcopus, who has sought advice from the Holy See. The pope agrees to allow the bishop to wear on his clothes the sign of the cross, according to the custom of the brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, from whom he was chosen to be bishop, and to swear an oath of security to the Hospitallers relating to an indemnification over the castle of Margatum, but he stresses that this should not create a precedent for the bishop’s successors, unless his predecessors acted similarly with respect to the lords of Margatum. The pope confirms the liberties, immunities and customs of the Valaniensis ecclesia, saving the privileges and all the rights of the bishops and of the brothers of the Hospital of Jerusalem. May 8. Aimery, Dei gratia rex Cipri et regni Jerosolymitani comestabulus, makes a sealed grant to Joscius Tyrensis archiepiscopus, giving him the casale in Cyprus called Levadi/Livardi/Livadi for his lifetime with all its rights and villani, as were previously held by Minas turcopulus. He gives the archbishop the right to all the produce and the freedom to export it without any exaction. After the death of Joscius the casale will pass to his nephew Simon and after Simon’s death to the church of Tyre. [256] Bernardus ecclesie Sancti Pauli de Antiochia abbas records under seal an agreement of confraternity made in the chapter of St Paul of Antioch with the abbey of St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat. When an abbot of St Paul visits St Mary he will be received as an abbot and can enter the choir and chapter and in the absence of the abbot of St Mary can absolve the monks from excommunication. His advice will be sought in election to the abbacy of St Mary and he will have the right to give his assent after the patriarch and the king. If the electors cannot agree on a suitable candidate the electors should look to elect someone from St Paul. The death of an abbot of St Mary will be treated with the same ceremony in St Paul as if he was an abbot there. Monks from St Mary visiting St Paul will be treated as if members of the same congregation. Monks who leave in discord from St Mary will be received by St Paul but will be disciplined and will be expected to make peace with their own community, but they will be sent away if they have been excommunicated. The deaths of monks of St Mary will be commemorated in St Paul, except that there will not be the usual alms-giving. If the land of Antioch falls into the hands of the Turci, St Mary will provide for the monks of St Paul. The abbot and monks of St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat will enjoy the same rights in St Paul as have been specified for the abbot and monks of St Paul. 1197.
