They are followed by others that inform the pope that when the German [crusaders] reached Acre, they recovered the castle at Beirut, which was undefended. The Sarraceni had attacked and taken Jaffa, killing thousands of Christians. The Germans, hearing rumours of the death of the western emperor, reembarked, leaving the Christian settlers in peril from the Sarraceni. With the agreement of his wife domina Plazencia Tripolis comitissa and his homines, Bohemond, the son of Prince Bohemond [III] of Antioch, Dei gratia Tripolis comes makes a sealed eleemosynary grant to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in repayment for the 37000 besants owed by his predecessor Count Raymond of Tripoli. He gives the tower over the Gate of St Nicholas at Acre, but the brothers are to have no rights over the Gate, which is an entrance to the city, nor can they make new exactions or dispose of the tower by gift, sale or pledge. If their Order is absorbed into another, they must surrender the tower to the crown, and they must also surrender it if the needs of war or other necessity demand, although it will be returned to them once the crisis is over. With the agreement of his wife Isabella, the daughter of King Amalric, Aimery, per dei gratia Ierusalem Latinorum rex nonus et rex Cypri, confirms all previous gifts made to the commune of Marseille by kings of Jerusalem, in return for its assistance in acquiring their kingdom. They confirm especially whatever Marseille has in Acre and all the maritime cities through charters from King Fulk and King Amalric. In return for the assistance of Marseille in bringing aid to Jaffa and the kingdom of Cyprus with 2800 Saracen besants, the commune has freedom to enter and leave, sell and buy in Cyprus, without the payment of dues. He also gives one of the royal casalia in Cyprus, called Flacie, with all its rustici and animals. E.
