They will arrange the marriage between King Hugh of Cyprus, the son of King Aimery, and Aelis, the elder daughter of domnus Henricus comes Campanie, If Aelis should die, a marriage will be arranged with Phylippa, the younger daughter, who will remain in Syria for at least 2 years, dating from next Easter. Queen [Maria], the mother of Iohannes de Ibelino and domnus Philippus his brother, is a guarantor. When King Hugh of Cyprus marries the older or younger daughter of comes Henricus, the countess of Champagne will give Iohannes de Ibelino and the others 150 marchae auri, valued at 56 besants a marca. Patriarch Albert of Jerusalem confirms under seal an eleemosynary gift made in his presence to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem by Aalys, the daughter of Turginus and a consoror of the Hospital. She gives 4 carrucate terre with houses in casale Geschale, which Turginus had bought for 1000 besants from King Guy and Queen Sibylla, when they were Joppensis et Ascalonensis comes et comitissa. She delivers the charter of that sale to frater Isembardus Hospitalis magnus preceptor and frater Ricardus Hospitalis thesaurarius. She also leaves the Hospital an eleemosynary gift of 100 besants, to be paid on her death by the sale of a rent [censuales] of 50 besants a year payable to her by Thomas Pisanus for houses he holds of her in the vicus Catene at Acre, situated before the house of Johannes Daht. The houses border on the east the public way [via publica] and on the south the house of the daughter of Joannes Daht. On the north they adjoin the house of Tortosa and on west overlook the sea, called Lordamer. Any surplus from the sale of the rent can be distributed in alms for her soul. The Hospitallers will receive the eleemosynary gift of 100 besants even if Aalys should die intestate. text: Jan. 9 Rome. St Peter’s. Pope Innocent III writes to the patriarch of Jerusalem, the papal legate, concerning a case being heard in Rome, involving magister Iohannes and P. the emissary of the patriarch of Antioch, who had protested over the actions in Syria of the papal legate Cardinal Peter of St Marcellus. On hearing that the archdeaconry of Antioch had been vacant for more than 6 months, Cardinal Peter had ruled that provision had devolved on the Holy See and had granted the archdeaconry to magister Iohannes. The patriarch had responded that he had already offered the office to his nephew and refused to carry out the instructions of the cardinal, who was now in Tortosa [Antaradus]. Cardinal Peter, asserting that the nephew was anyway under age, confirmed his own decision and appointed the prior Bellimontis and magister Milo to instal magister Joannes in the choir and chapter and confim him in his benefices. And, knowing that other canonries were vacant, he had assigned 2 to the clerics Rog[er]ius and Barth[olome]us. The dispute came to involve the bishops of Tripoli and Tortosa [Antaradensis], Marinus Nicociensis archidiaconus and the bishop of Valenia [Valaciensis episcopus] and the journey of W. quondam archidiaconus Antiochenus and the 2 canons to Rome. It culminated in appeals to the Holy See. The patriarch himself pointed to the damage his church had suffered from the prince and citizens of Antioch. He asserted, moreover, that the new archdeacon was uncanonically appointed, because he had been a monk of the abbey of the Holy Spirit at Palermo. Stressing papal rights of provision the pope orders the patriarch of Jerusalem to settle the case. Jan. 9 Rome. St Peter’s. He asks the patriarch of Jerusalem to work for the liberation of the patriarch of Antioch and his nephews, to release the count from excommunication if he frees them, and to mediate between the count and the Templars and the king of Armenia.
