Guillelmus de Keviller, the son of dominus Petrus de Keviller, records that he gave Girinus, the prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in France [Francia] a rent in return for assistance from the magister Hospitalis in gaining the release of his father, who was imprisoned in a castle of the Sarraceni commonly called Saona. Guillelmus travelled to Syria, where he met frater Guarinus de Monte Acuto magister Hospitalis, who agreed to do what he could. But in the middle of the negotiations his father died, although had he survived, his freedom would have been gained. He now confirms his gift as an eleemosynary grant in the presence of dominus Galterus castellanus de Rassa; dominus Johannes de Aubeigny; Lamfridus clericus et nuncius domini regis Francie; and Gerardus clericus et filius dominus Durandi de Fuer. He has no seal and therefore asks the prior Dominici Sepulchri, representing the patriarch of Jerusalem, to seal for him. May 8. Acre. Addressing Raynerius Bethleemitice civitatis episcopus and his successors, Pope Gregory IX draws attention to the ruling of Pope Lucius II that letters purporting to have been issued by Popes Paschal II and Calixtus II subjecting the parish of Ascalon to Bethlehem were forgeries, but he nevertheless follows Popes Innocent II, Lucius II, [Innocent III] [339] and Honorius III in confirming the privileges of the church of Bethlehem. He confirms in particular the church’s possessions, which he lists: the tithes of Thecua, Seyr and Bethscuar; the casalia of Sanctus Georgius, Bethenase, Bethelaam, Berbetham and Quercus; a garden at Archas; the land and herbir of Belmekim and Oliban in the diocese of Ramla; Belveir in the province of Caesarea; Bedaica in the province of Nazareth; Haim in the diocese of Tiberias; the churches of St Martin in Tyre, St Mary in Gibeletum, St Mary on Mt Pèlerin with Calamon, and a church in Jaffa.
