text: Dec. 1-24. Johannes de Ibilino Beryty dominus makes a sealed grant to the Venetians. They are freed from all dues [ius et consuetudo] on all goods they import through the cathena of Beirut and send to Beirut and on all merchandise they buy in the funda of Beirut. All Venetian ships [uasella] importing or exporting merchandise will be exempt from [the payment of] terciaria and all Venetian ships will be exempt from the payment of ancoragia. The Venetians are given a free curia in Beirut, with the reservation to the lord of cases of homicide, force and pillage [rapina]. Other Venetians will not suffer if any Venetian commits piracy at sea against the homines of Johannes. Venetian goods will be secure in cases of shipwreck. text: Dec. 30. Lateran. Pope Honorius commends to Queen Alice of Cyprus C. Amochostanus episcopus, whom he is sending back to Cyprus. The bishop has informed the pope of the convention between the Cypriot church and Queen Alice of Cyprus [Oct. 1-31 1220]. The pope reports that he has confirmed the agreement. Alice has asked that those Greeks who are not obedient to the Roman church should be allowed to remain in residence. The pope replies that he wishes to favour Greeks who obey the apostolic see and to allow them to retain their customs and rites, but because it would be monstrous and against the constitutions of the general council for a diocese to have several bishops, he has ordered the patriarch of Jerusalem and the archbishops of Tyre and Caesarea to remove these [Greek] bishops, enjoining Greek abbots, priests and deacons in the kingdom of Cyprus to obey the [Latin] bishop established in their diocese The queen should assist. Pope Honorius III writes to the patriarch of Jerusalem and the archbishops of Tyre and Caesarea. 1 Latin metropolitan and 3 suffragan bishops have been established on Cyprus by the legates of the Holy See, but a Greek archbishop and Greek bishops have also been instituted without papal authority and maintain the Greek errors. It would be monstrous and against the constitutions of the general council for a diocese to have several bishops. He orders the patriarch of Jerusalem and the archbishops of Tyre and Caesarea to remove these Greek bishops, enjoining Greek abbots, priests and deacons in the kingdom of Cyprus to obey the Latin bishop established in their diocese, according to the convention made between Queen Alice and the prelates. But the archbishop of Nicosia unjustly receives the tithes of the casalia of Melias and Saforia, and of other places in the districts. Pope Honorius III orders the patriarch of Jerusalem, the bishop of Bethlehem and the archdeacon of Acre to investigate and restore the tithes to the archbishop of Famagusta if that is appropriate. Amochostanus episcopus] to Rome to inform the pope of conditions in Cyprus and obtain confirmation of the convention between the Cypriot church and Queen Alice of Cyprus [Oct. 1-31 1220], the pope reports that he has confirmed the agreement. Alice has asked that those Greeks who are not obedient to the Roman church should be allowed to remain in residence.
