Now, in Henry’s presence and that of his court [cort], Balian de Ybelin and Eschive make an eleemosynary grant of Esteriga and Paleochorio to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, represented by frere Guillaume de Forest comandor, with the exceptions already specified. text: Nov. 17. Lateran. Pope Gregory IX rebukes the king and queen of Cyprus. They, and their barones and milites, refuse to pay tithes to the archbishop of Nicosia and his suffragans. They ignore sentences of excommunication imposed on the barones, milites and balivi on account of their failure to pay tithes or their illegitimate marriages. They appoint Greci and Suriani as balivi, ignoring Latins [Latini]. They pledge far-off possessions to the Knights Templar and Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem and other exempt religious, who are absolved from the payment of tithes. Pope Gregory IX writes to the king of Cyprus, the prince of Antioch, the bajulus regni Jerosolimitani, the barones of the kingdoms of Cyprus and Jerusalem, the patriarch of Jerusalem, the bishop of Lydda, the patriarch of Antioch, all prelates in Syria, the magister and brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, and the preceptor and brothers of the Knights Templar. He informs them that he has proclaimed a new crusade. He asks for assistance in the deliverance of many Knights Templar and others, who are held in prison by persecutors, through exchanges, involving the freeing of all slaves - Sarraceni or Turchi - held by the Christians.
