Pope Innocent IV writes to the bishop and chapter of Tripoli, relating that he granted his relative Niccolò [Lercari], papal chamberlain and provost of the church of Genoa, the chantry, prebend, houses and everything else pertaining to them, including what are called the minuta (extrinseca et intrinseca ac alia que minuta dicuntur), that the bishop-elect of Bethlehem Gottifredo dei Prefetti possessed previously in their church, a decision motivated by Niccolò’s merits, and the pope invested Niccolò with these things using the papal ring. The bishop and chapter of Tripoli are expected to receive kindly Niccolò or the agent who will represent him, notwithstanding various things to the contrary, for example papal orders prohibiting the investiture of an absent cleric. Otherwise the patriarch of Jerusalem (Robert de Nantes) will carry out the papal mandate, compelling those who contradict. 2477A. January 3. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the master and brothers Templar of Jerusalem, relating that he was told on their behalf that when they send their brothers to collect alms and other necessities with a papal letter granting them this right, several archpriests, deans ‘of Christianity’ and other rectors, priests and chaplains of churches refuse to abide, on the pretext that the letter is addressed to archbishops, bishops, abbots, priors, deans, archdeacons and other prelates of churches. Pope Innocent IV writes to the master and brothers of the Teutonic Order of Jerusalem, relating that they explained before the pope that after their former [Grand] Master Gerhard [von Malberg] resigned in their castle of Montfort, leaving the authentic and perpetual seal of the master on the altar, as is customary, and went from their house to the house of the Templars, he rashly had a new seal made, and the addressees fear lest he should oblige them in any debts. The pope grants that they shall not be held responsible concerning any debts of the former master after his resignation, especially since the new master gave the former master 400 silver marks at the Apostolic See to pay his debts. Pope Innocent IV writes to the patriarch of Jerusalem and papal legate (Robert de Nantes), relating that the abbot and monks of the Greek monastery of St Margaret of Agros, of the Order of St Basil, in the Nicosia diocese, explained to him in an extensive petition that they frequently suffer serious harassment from certain people from the Nicosia and Limassol dioceses. The pope commands the patriarch not to allow anyone to trouble unduly, and contrary to their privilege of papal protection, the monks’ persons, rights, goods, monastery, and grange of St Mary of ‘Stilo’ on Cape ‘Cavata’, restraining molesters with ecclesiastical censure without appeal.
