With the agreement of his chapter, Eustorge de Montaigut (Eustorgius), archbishop of Nicosia makes a sealed grant to Andronicus, his brothers, Theodorus and Iohannes, and his sister Fugna, they being the children of the late Nicolaus Teupetomeno. He gives them and their heirs the houses their father and they built in the curia where was once the abbatia que vocatur Teupetomeno. text: February 8. Nicosia. In the palatium of Eustorge de Montaigut (Eustorgius), archbishop of Nicosia (archiepiscopus Nicosiensis). Together with his convent, Frater Georgius abbas Episcopie records under his seal and those of dominus Stephanus Famagustanus episcopus and dominus B. archdeacon of Nicosia (archidiaconus Nicosiensis) that among the other orders Rogerius Normandus miles made in his will he left the abbey of Bellapais [Episcopia] 600 Saracen besants and a cross made from the wood of the True Cross [de ligno Dominico], with gold inserted, on condition that the abbey established a chantry priest from among the monks or from among the secular priests at the abbey’s house at Paphos, or elsewhere, under the authority of the archbishop of Nicosia, to celebrate Mass perpetually for Robertus and for his wife domina Haelis. The abbot additionally records that he has received from Eustorge de Montaigut (Eustorgius), archbishop of Nicosia (archiepiscopus Nicosiensis), the 600 besants and the cross. They promise to fulfil the abbey’s obligations. Pope Innocent IV writes to the archbishop of Nicosia [Eustorge de Montaigut] and the bishop of Limassol, relating that he was informed on behalf of Master [William of Chastel Neuf (Châteauneuf)] and brothers of the Hospital of Jerusalem that Count [Earl] Richard of Cornwall, the brother of King [Henry III] of England, repaired the walls, ditches and other defensive elements of the castle of Ascalon situated on the pagan frontier during his sojourn in Outremer, and the Hospitallers took over the care of the castle against the enemies of the faith, when others refused. Because they went to great expense for this and continue to do so, lest they be defrauded of their labour and expense in the future should the castle be taken from their care, they asked the pope to provide for them. The pope orders the addressees, if it is so, and if the castle should ever devolve on someone else, to have the person who has dominion make full restitution of the expenses of the Hospitallers. Pope Innocent IV writes to Archbishop [Eustorge de Montaigut] of Nicosia, on whose behalf it was explained to the pope that the pope had assigned three prebends in the Nicosia Church, although the archbishop has no other prebendal churches in which he is able to provide for worthy clerics beside the Nicosia Church itself, in which there are only ten prebends. The pope grants that the archbishop cannot be compelled to the provision or reception of anyone by a papal letter not making full mention of the collation of the three prebends and of the number of ten prebends. text: June 25. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the patriarch of Jerusalem (Robert de Nantes) and Bishop [Gauthier II] of Acre, relating that the bishop-elect of Bethlehem (Gottifredo dei Prefetti) explained to him with bitterness that the bishop of Paphos (Giovanni Romano), then claiming to be bishop-elect of Bethlehem, and certain canons of that church, his accomplices, by pawning and other means, alienated several houses in Acre, casals, privileges and other things, even precious relics, belonging to the church of Bethlehem, and the bishop of Paphos himself took away other things, to the great prejudice of that church. Some of these items are known to be held by Master [Richard de Bures] and the knights Templar in Acre, some by the lord of Beirut [Balian of Ibelin], and others by other persons both religious and secular, clergy and lay, from whom the bishop of Paphos and the canons received a large sum of money in return. The pope orders the addresses to investigate and, if they find that the bishop of Paphos and his accomplices have thus alienated houses and other things, to force them to restore them to that church and to make full satisfaction to the Templars, the lord of Beirut and the other persons for the money they paid and to the bishop-elect of Bethlehem for the things they took, so that that church incurs no damage and suffers no trouble from them on this account, notwithstanding various obstacles, including the summons by which the pope ordered the bishop of Paphos to come to the Apostolic See to appear before him to respond to the bishop-elect of Bethlehem, which the pope revokes, and the fact that the bishop of Paphos is staying on this side of the sea (in the West). If the bishop of Paphos returns to his church or to Syria by Christmas, the addressees are to cite him to appear before them, if he wishes, and they are to investigate the truth. Otherwise they are to proceed as above without citing him. June 25. Lyons.
