Pope Innocent IV writes to the [Roman] cleric Diodato dei Prefetti, nephew of the bishop-elect of Bethlehem [Gottifredo dei Prefetti], relating that on special papal mandate Master Jourdain [de Caurel], papal subdeacon and notary, granted him the then vacant archdeaconate of Ascalon, which is also called of Bethlehem, along with all rights and appurtenances, notwithstanding that it is usually granted to regular persons, as the chapter of Bethlehem and some others are said to claim, and the Jourdain invested Master Berardo di l’Aquila (Forcone) with it in the addressee’s name. Pope Innocent IV writes to Archbishop [Eustorge] of Nicosia, relating that the archbishop informed the pope that several Greek monks of some Greek monasteries in his jurisdiction, seduced by the Devil, refuse or receive unwillingly and overturn the Church’s commands, contrary to their monastic calling, which they disgrace. They also welcome and support other Greeks damned with heresy, are involved in sedition in other ways, and commit horrible crimes. The pope wishes to reinforce the archbishop’s own authority to correct these abuses and reform these monasteries, removing vices and planting virtues, notwithstanding appeals intended to delay discipline.
