The barons, knights and citizens [barons et chevalers et citeens] of the kingdom of Jerusalem, represented by Balien d’Ybelin seignor de Baruth and his brothers and Iohan d’Ybelin, present their proposals for peace in the kingdom, to be transmitted to the emperor Frederick. They require his favour and his pardon for all misdemeanours committed to the present in the discord in the land. They ask that he appoint as his bail over all the kingdom mon sire Simon de Montfort conte de Leicestre, to hold office until King Conrad comes of age or until the king comes out to the Holy Land or appoints Simon’s successor. Simon should swear to preserve the rights of the emperor and son King Conrad and to govern in accordance with the usages, customs and assises [par les ous et les costumes et par les assises] of the kingdom of Jerusalem. In return the barons and others will swear to obey the bail and will surrender the bell, consuls [conseles] and captains [chevetaines] of the commune, save those in post before the emperor became lord of the land. Frederick should record his agreement to this form of peace under seal. With the agreement of his wife domina Aeliz and his sons, Johannes de Ibelino dominus de Arsur makes a sealed eleemosynary grant, masking a sale, to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, represented by frater Petrus de Veteri Brivata domus Hospitalis Jerosolimitani magister. The Order already owns half of the mills of Tres Pontes. Johannes now gives the other half, together with the island adjoining them, which is situated between them and Vetus Pons, over which runs the road to Arsur. The land extends as far as the large stream called Jorgilra that flows below the hill [turon] called filie de Comar and then as far as the Vetus Pons, where a boundary between the land of the Hospital of St John and that of the lord of Arsur is marked. The other boundary runs from the mills to another stream flowing from Jorgilia. In return the magister and brothers of the Hospital of St John give Johannes 3000 besants. text: Jul. 1-31. Ricardus comes Cornubiae et Pictaviae describes his crusade to Baldwin de Redvers earl of Devon, the abbot of Beaulieu and Robert, clerk. After touching on the disaster that befell the earlier crusaders at Gaza and on the discord reigning in the Holy Land, with particular criticism of the military orders, he recounts how dominus rex Navariae, the leader of the army, and the comes Britanniae left the Holy Land 15 days before he and his force reached Acre. They had made a truce lasting 40 days with Nazer, the lord of Kerak, according to which he would return the prisoners taken at Gaza. Ricardus made sure that the truce still prevailed, but was informed that it would not be renewed. He proceeded to Jaffa, where he was met by an emissary of the sultan of Egypt, suggesting a truce. Following the advice of the dux Burgundiae, comes Walterus de Bresne and the magister of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, Ricardus agreed and lists the benefits, including the lands returned to the Christians: the mountain of Beirut, all the land of Sidon, the castles of Beuforde, Cozenis and Castrum Novum, le Kayt Scandalis, Lebet, Becheed, Sanctus Georgius, the town of Toronia, Tabaria, castrum de Benaer, castrum de Amabel, Ramla, Amoat, Alaw, castrum de Hybilis with its dependencies to the east beyond the river, castrum de Saphet, Nazareth, mons Thabor, Ligum, Aschalis, castrum de Beithgirim with all the casalia that belonged to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem there; and among the dependencies of Jerusalem and Bethlehem, all the lands and casalia along the roads from Jerusalem to Bethlehem and from Jerusalem to Ramla and from Ramle to Jaffa. Also returned to the Christians are the town of Jerusalem, Bethlehem and all the lands around Jerusalem, with the casalia named in the truce: Sanctus Lazarus de Bethania, Brihaida, Wissewerch, Dersfat, Bethamo, Betheles, Bechit Anon, Kocabi, Bersamul, Belrit Kykay, Bethame, Behe Kipsa, Behit Yorep, Athacana, Clepsta, Tolma, Argahong, Bertapsa, Bethsaphace, Tablie, Sorobooz. There will be an exchange of prisoners-of-war. Richard describes how, once the truce had been concluded, he went to Ascalon, which he refortified, hoping to complete the works a month after Easter. Although there was a delay in getting a formal response from the sultan, which did not arrive until the Thursday after Candlemas, all the released Christian prisoners of war reached him on 23 April. He sailed from Acre on 3 May and landed at Trapani in Sicily on 1 July. He then intended to visit the Roman curia before returning to England. Jul. 1-31.
