Pope Innocent IV writes to the prior of the Friars Preacher (Dominicans) of Nicosia, relating that Bonvassal [of Aude] chancellor of the Kingdom of Cyprus is suffering much harassment from several people, both clerics and laymen, who seek to harm others. The pope orders the prior not to permit the chancellor’s person or possessions to be unduly harmed by anyone, notwithstanding the Dominicans’ papal indulgence that they are not bound to deal unwillingly with cases committed to them by the Apostolic See. Benencasa, quondam Leonardi Cascinensis filius, etc. declares by orders of Guido de Sancto Cassiano quondam Galli, consul comunis Pisanorum Accon et totius Syrie, to have seen and transcribed the privilege of Frederick II (21-31 April 1229: RRH 1006 and RRR 2117) in the presence of Gerardus Marandellus, Benencasa dictus Grassus quondam Riccii, Pipinus Conetti, the notary Ugolinus quondam Bandini and other witnesses. He also describes Frederick’s golden bull: one side the image of a city surrounded by the letters + ROMA CAPUT MUNDI REGIS ORBI FRENA ROTUNDI and on the other an enthroned emperor with a cross in his right hand and an orb in his left; to the left is the legend SANCTUS REX IERUSALEM and to the right SICILIE, surrounded by the inscription + FRIDERICUS DEI GRATIA ROMANORUM IMPERATOR ET SEMPER AUGUSTUS. text: March 26. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the bishop of Winchester (William de Raley), relating that at the time of his election bishop-elect of Bethlehem (Gottifredo dei Prefetti) held the church of Long Itchington in the diocese of Coventry, which the pope reserved for him, and that, via the bishop-elect’s agent, a deacon, the conservators whom the pope delegated for this ordered the cleric Philip of Haskell, who occupies the church, to restore the church and the incomes received in the meantime. Instead, Philip had the agent beaten so severely that two ribs were broken, he had the tail of the agent’s horse cut off, and he had the agent’s servant bound with the horse in the stable. When the dean of Wells (John Sarrizin), a papal chaplain, to whom the pope assigned the business, wished to proceed with the case, Philip had the dean detained by the king’s bailiffs until he promised not to proceed further, but he captured the agents of the bishop-elect until on pain of 200 marks security they promised not to pursue the matter. The pope orders the bishop to enjoin on Philip to restore the church and its incomes, pay the bishop-elect’s expenses, and do satisfaction to the agents for their injuries, or appear at the papal curia within two months. Pope Innocent IV writes to John Sarrazin, papal subdeacon and chaplain, dean of Wells, living in England, relating that Diodato dei Prefetti, nephew of bishop-elect of Bethlehem [Gottifredo dei Prefetti], explained to him that when the pope once ordered the addressee to provide Diodato with a benefice in the Kingdom of England worth thirty silver marks, the addressee neglected to do so, so the pope now orders the addressee to provide one worth that many marks or more, up to fifty.
