Pope Alexander IV writes to the chapter of Verdun ( Virdunensis) ordering them to welcome and obey Bishop-Elect Robertus [II] of Verdun (Virdunensis), whom the pope appointed following his transfer and promotion of Jacobus (Jacques Pantaléon) as patriarch of Jerusalem. The pope similar letters to the clergy of the city and diocese of Verdun (Virdunensis), the people of the city and diocese of Verdun (Virdunensis), and the vassals of the church of Verdun (Virdunensis).

text: October 7. Anagni. Pope Alexander IV writes to the master and brothers of the Hospital of Jerusalem, relating that he has learned that the Hospital is burdened with unbearable debts that they cannot repay because of their reduced incomes in these bad times, which are hardly enough to cover the interest (et vix sufficientes voragini usurarum exonerari non potest), unless they have outside help. Lest the Hospital collapse to the grave detriment to the Holy Land, the pope grants that they can receive up to 2,000 silver marks anywhere outside the Kingdom of Germany from money spent in redemption of crusading vows; from money gained via usury, robbery, or other evil ways that the faithful order to be restored in their last will or are ready to do so while they are living, even if they are healthy, as long as those to whom the money must be restored cannot be found at all; and from testaments of the faithful with bequests to the Holy Land without expressing specific places or persons. Those who give this money to the Hospital shall not be obliged to do other restitution or satisfaction for that money, but they remain held to restore any remaining amount, if there is any.

text: October 9. Acre. In the palatium of the archbishop of Nazareth. Henry, archbishop of Nazareth, and the chapter of Nazareth in recognition of his service, unanimously grant to Madius de Marino, Genoese, citizen of Acre, and his heirs two free carucates of land and two voltae in their casal of Saphoria just as Radulfus Anglicus once held from the church of Nazareth in burgisiam. Also we give to him and his heirs a certain house in Nazareth with land where there are olives and a piece of land planted with vines. The boundaries of the house are as follows: to the east a certain house belonging to the church of Nazareth; the west the house of Peter de Berito; on the other sides is the public road. The boundaries of the olives are: on the east a certain foresta and land of the said church; on the west is waste ground (locus desertus) belonging to the church: on one side is the land of the late Syr Aseti. The boundaries of the land planted with vines are: on the east the land of Georgius scriba; on the west is the vineyard of Johannis Faber; on one side is the road which leads to the casale of Aylot; the others are known to the land granted by us or our predecessors to certain burgesses from Nazareth or Saphoria and subsequently reverted to us as they were without heirs. The grant is permanent, but permission must be sought before any of the property can be alienated. The property is to be held freely except for the tithe due on the Feast of the Annunciation of one rotulus of grain. Our lead seal is affixed by Petrus Yspanus de Nazareth. Witnesses: Magister Guillelmus, archdeacon of Nazareth; Petrus Yspanus, Ylarius the priest, Andreas Yspanus the priest, Albertus, archbishop’s clerk; Sororius, scriba syrus; and many others.

Pope Alexander IV writes to Patriarch Jacobus [Pantaléon] of Jerusalem, papal legate, with a long arenga about the Holy Land and the office of legate, which he assigns to the patriarch in the province of Jerusalem and wherever the Christian army for the Holy Land is in that province, ordering him to take up the burden of his legation, granting him the power to compel rebels with ecclesiastical censure without appeal, but adding that if another papal legate a latere is sent to those parts, while he is there the patriarch shall not occupy the office of legate, out of reverence for the Apostolic See.

Pope Alexander IV writes to the archbishops, bishops, abbots, priors, deans, provosts, and other prelates and all chapters and convents of the churches and monasteries, both exempt and not, in the patriarchate of Jerusalem, informing them – after a long arenga about the importance of their province – that he has committed the office of full legation in the province of Jerusalem and over the Christian army for the Holy Land wherever it is in that province to Patriarch [Jacques Pantaléon] of Jerusalem. The pope orders the addressees to receive devoutly, treat honourably, faithfully assist, and humbly accept and obey the healthy mandates of the legate, for he will have observed the sentences that the legate promulgates against rebels, without appeal. But if it happens that another papal legate a latere is sent to those parts, while he is there the patriarch shall not occupy the office of legate, out of reverence for the Apostolic See.

Pope Alexander IV writes to Patriarch [Jacques Pantaléon], papal legate, relating that the patriarch told him that the late Pope I[nnocentius IV] granted the master and brothers of the knighthood of the Temple and the present pope also granted to the master and brothers of the Hospital of Jerusalem that everywhere outside the Kingdom of Germany the Templars could receive up to 10,000 silver marks and the Hospitallers up to 2,000 silver marks from redemptions of crusading vows in aid of the Holy land and from bequests of the faithful for aid to the Holy Land when specific places and persons are not expressed, granting them certain conservators for this. On the pretext of this indulgence, the Templars started to receive these redemptions and bequests in the Kingdom of Jerusalem while the see of Jerusalem was vacant, and the patriarch fears, as he says, that the Hospitallers want to do the same, to the patriarch's prejudice and trouble. The patriarch asserts that his predecessors were long accustomed to receiving these redemptions and bequests in the kingdom when there was no papal legate a latere in those parts. Thus the pope responds to the patriarch's requests by granting that no such indulgence granted or to be granted will generate any prejudice for the patriarch regarding receiving such redemptions and bequests in the kingdom, unless it makes full and express mention of the present indulgence, rather the patriarch shall receive them as his predecessors did until now.

Pope Alexander IV writes to the same [Patriarch Jacobus (Pantaléon) of Jerusalem], relating that the patriarch's petition shown to him claimed that in cathedrals and other churches in his patriarchate the customary number of those who serve has decreased, although the faculties of the churches have not declined to the same extent, on account of which those churches are defrauded of their due services. The pope responds to the patriarch's request by granting that he can arrange those churches as he sees fit according to their faculties, if those responsible for this arrangement do not do so themselves within six months of the patriarch's admonition.

Pope Alexander IV writes to Archbishop [Hugh] of Nicosia (Nicosiensis), relating that Patriarch [Jacques Pantaléon] of Jerusalem, papal legate, informed him that Pope I[nnocentius IV] had sent a letter to Master [Renaud] and the Templars allowing them to collect up to 10,000 silver marks anywhere outside the Kingdom of Germany from money spent for the redemption of crusading vows in support of the Holy Land and from testaments of the faithful in support of the Holy Land that do not name specific people or places, granting the Templars Archbishop [Henry] of Nazareth as conservator in this matter. On the pretext of this indulgence, the master and brothers collected such redemptions and bequests in the Kingdom of Jerusalem while the see of Jerusalem was vacant. But because, as the patriarch asserted, his predecessors had long been accustomed to receiving such payments and bequests in the kingdom when no papal legate a latere was in the area, the pope sent a letter stating that no indulgence conceded or to be conceded to the Templars or brothers of any other orders or even secular clerics was to prejudice in any way the patriarch’s receiving these payments and bequests in that kingdom. So the pope is sending a letter to the archbishop of Nazareth ordering him not to have these payments made to the master and brothers of the Temple. If the archbishop of Nazareth does not carry out his mandate, the pope orders the archbishop of Nicosia to force him to do so, notwithstanding any papal indulgence or counciliar decision exempting him from interdict, suspension, or excommunication.
