text: March 10. (1255 o.s.) Acre. In the palatium of the archbishop of Tyre. In the presence of E[gidius] archbishop of Tyre, B[ernardus], cantor and vicarius episcopi et ecclesie of Acre (Acconensis) presented the case against Signoretus clericus and Marchus clericus de Clavaro (Chiavari). Securities taken from Signoretus and Marchus for the cantor and Girardus canon of Acre and magister Petrus advocatus for as much as 200 besants. Signoretus’s securities are Balduinus Bancarius, Marchio Marqueis dean of Tiberias, Renaldus and Gerardus the executioners (carnifices) and similarly from the cantor. The cantor, Girardus and Petrus swore on the gospels that Signoretus had presented papal letters to the effect that he should have prebend and the office of treasurer of Acre which they asserted were forged (false). The archbishop already had the archdeacon of Tiberias and the treasurer of Caesarea to assist in his judgement, but he now called in the archbishops of Caesarea and Nazareth (Joscelin and Henry), the bishop of Lydda [Arnaud (?)], the abbots of the Templum Domini, Mount Tabor and Saint Samuel, the Franciscan minister, the prior of the Dominicans in Acre with some of his brothers, the marshals of the Temple and Hospital with a large number of their brothers. After an examination of the document, it was declared forged. Signoretus and his associate Marchus were to be held in custody pending sentence to be delivered by the pope. He issues a sealed order that Signoretus be imprisoned for forgery until the papal judgement is made. Other charges included disrupting the services from the stall he had usurped and, making death threats against the cantor, Gerardus and Petrus. Egidius, auctor domini pape judex et natarius publicus wrote his document and added his signature. The archbishop of Tyre attached his seal.

text: March 15. Lateran. Pope Alexander IV writes to the abbot and monks of the Cistercian abbey of Belliloci (Beaulieu) on the island of Cyprus in the diocese of Nicosia (Nicosiensis), relating that their petition that was read to him claimed that via a letter Cardinal-Bishop [Eudes of Châteauroux] of Tusculum (Tusculanus), then papal legate in those parts, had conceded to them the right to transfer to the place of Belli Loci next to Nicosia, more proper for contemplative uses, from the place of Pirgo (Pyrgos) where they were then residing, which for many justifiable reasons was unsuitable, notwithstanding the opposing constitution of the Cistercian Order. On the authority of this concession the abbot and monks afterwards moved to Beaulieu. At their request, the pope confirms and strengthens this concession and the monks’ transfer, allowing them to remain there freely and licitly, notwithstanding any letters obtained or to be obtained or if Archbishop [Hugh] and the chapter of Nicosia do not agree. The pope then quotes the legate’s letter of 21 July 1251.

Pope Alexander IV writes to the master and brothers of the house of the knighthood of the Temple of Jerusalem, responding to their requests by confirming and strengthening their possession of their casalia, estates, lands, and other goods along with their rights and appurtenances that they have possessed justly and peacefully for 40 years and more and for which they have legitimate title.

text: March 25. Lateran. Pope Alexander IV writes to the archbishop of Nazareth (Nazarenus), relating that the archbishop informed him that he cannot reside at his church, especially while the pagans hold it, the Lord permitting. Responding to his requests, the pope grants that during this time he can exercise whatever jurisdiction he has over his subjects in Acre (Accon), where he asserts that he has a church, houses, and possessions.

Pope Alexander IV writes to Patriarch [Jacques Pantaléon] of Jerusalem, papal legate, relating that since he has committed to him the office of full legation in his province and over the Christian army there in the support of the Holy Land, he orders him to carry it out prudently, diligently, and faithfully. The pope informs the legate that he has sent letters to the masters, preceptors, convents, and all the brothers of the Hospital of St John, the knighthood of the Temple, the houses of St Mary of the Teutonics, and of St Lazarus in that province ordering them to welcome, treat honourably, assist, and receive and observe the healthy warnings and mandates of the legate as long as he exercises that function.

text: March 1 – 31. (1255 o.s.) Tripoli. In the palatium of the prince of Antioch and count of Tripoli. Bohemond (Boemund) [VI], prince of Antioch and count of Tripoli, son of Bohemond (Boemund) [V] out of devotion to the house of the Hospital and out of the great respect he has for the Hospitaller master Guillaume de Chastel Noef and by the hand of Huge Revel, grand commander of Acre, makes an eleemosynary grant of piped water (tuel d’aigue) and a tithe of all the fish taken from garden facing the gate of Hospitaller house in Tripoli known as le jardin de la Gloriette. He also confirms all the urban properties and rents in city of Tripoli. He seals this act which is witnessed by his homes: Guillaume lord of Botron, Meillor lord of Maraclee, Johan lord of Puy, Johan marshal of Tripoli, Johan Pierre, Henri de Camerdais, Thomas Arra, Johan de Flaincort, Angele Pierre, Remond Arra, Pierre de la Gibroille. Given by Johan mon chancelier de Triple.

Pope Alexander IV writes to the archbishop and chapter of Nazareth (Nazareni), answering their just prayers by granting that, since the church of Nazareth has already been in the hands of the pagans for 39 years, as long as the church is held by pagans, God permitting, this shall not be counted against the church nor can anything be levied against it.

text: April 30. Acre. Guillaume de Chastel Nuef, master of the Hospital issues a sealed document in which he declares that in the dispute between John of Ibelin (Johan d’Ybelin), count of Jaffa and the Hospitallers concerning the matter of Ascalon which is subject to the arbitration of Phelipe de Montfort, lord of Tyre and Tozon, Hugue Revel, grand commander of the Hosptialler house of Acre, and P[ierre] d’Avalon, constable of Tiberias, that, at the arbiters’ request, he agrees to an extension of the deadline for the completion of their arbitration to the feast of St John the Baptist and that he will be bound by their arbitration. Witnessed by the Hospitaller brothers: Joffrei de Raillane, acting in place of the marshal, Guillaume des Corcelles, Phelipe de Glies, Guichart the drapier, Henri the hospitalier, P. the turcoplier, Joseph the tresorier.

Bohemond (Boemons) [VI], prince of Antioch and count of Tripoli, son of Bohemond (Boemond) [V] declares that the dispute that he and his homes have had with the Hospitallers, both in his own time and in the time of his late father are now resolved, and that he withdraws all the claims against the Order. text: May 5. Lateran. Pope Alexander IV writes to the master and brothers of the hospital of Blessed Martin the Confessor in Acre (Acon), relating that the archbishop of Tyre (Tyrensis), as he has learned, ordered to be constructed with his own goods their hospital for receiving and maintaining poor Bretons from the province of Tours (Turonensis) crossing the sea in support of the Holy Land. Responding to his and the addressees' requests, the pope grants that they can freely and perpetually wear on their clothing as their habit the image of Blessed Martin the Confessor sharing his pallium (cloak) with a pauper, any prohibition notwithstanding.
