O[pizo] bishop of Tripoli and the chapter confirm an agreement between the Hospitaller master, Hugues Revel and Philip, cantor of the church of Tripoli, on the dispute between them concerning tithes on casaus and lands that the order owns in the county of Tripoli and which has come before the papal judge delegates. By it the cantor ratifies an agreement made on 9 December 1125 between Raymond Dupuy, the Hospitaller master, and Bernard, bishop of Tripoli, exempting the Order from the payment of tithes

text: August 2. Acre. E[ustorgius], bishop of Tiberias, and J[ohannes], abbas S. Samuelis Acconensis ordinis Praemonstratensium, address the prior of the church of St Laurence of the Genoese in Tyre. In accord with the letter of Pope Alexander dated 15 January 1256 (q.v.) they delegate to the prior the task investing the Hospitallers with the property of St Lazarus located in the diocese of Tyre.

text: August 2. Ind. II. Acre. E[ustorgius], bishop of Tiberias, and J[ohannes], abbot of S. Samuelis Acconensis ordinis Praemonstratensium, address Bartholomeus, cantor of Valencia (Valeniensi). In accord with the letter of Pope Alexander dated 15 January 1256 (q.v.) they delegate the task investing the Hospitallers with the property of St Lazarus located in the dioceses of Tripoli, Tortosa (Anteradi), Valenie and Biblii. He is to place the Hospitaller preceptor of Tripoli in corporeal possession.

text: August 5. Ind. II. Tyre. In the platea before the aqueduct (conductus). The Hospitaller preceptor in Tyre, in the presence of the notary and witnesses named below, has received letters sealed with two seals which are described: one with the legend S. Eustorgii episcopi Tiberiadensis, and the other S. abbatis et ecclesie S. Samuelis d Monte Gaudii [Then follows the text of the letter of 2 August (RRR 3268) addressed to the prior of St Laurence of the Genoese in Tyre]. Then, in the certain house near the aqueduct belonging to St Lazarus of Bethany, the prior formally transferred the abbey’s properties in the diocese of Tyre to the preceptor. Witnesses: Matthaeus presbiter; Bruno, Johannes dictus Paillart, Jacobus dictus Duendon knights; Youseph scriba, Thomas Faber and many others. I, Egidius, judex et notarius publicus, composed the document.

text: August 9. Ind. II. Tripoli. In the house of the church of St Lazarus of Bethany in Tripoli. In the presence of Celestinus, Joannes de S. Vitale, beneficed in the church of Tripoli, Jacobus de Baro, priest, and Symon Lornius, magister Bartholomaeus, cantor of Valencia (Valeniensi), on the authority of the letters of [Eustorgius] bishop of Tiberias and the abbot of St Samuel of Acre of the Premonstratensian order transcribed below (letter of 2 August addressed to Bartholomeus, RRR 3269) has placed the Hospitaller preceptor of Tripoli in possession of the all the properties of St Lazarus in the city or diocese of Tripoli. Celestinus, beneficed in the church of Tripoli, by papal authority publicus tabellio composed this document.

text: August 11. Anagni. Pope Alexander IV writes to the master and brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, praising their role in support of the Holy Land in a long arenga and relating that he has learned that there is no distinction in dress between the brother knights of their order and the rest, unlike what is observed in many other similar orders. On account of this, when many nobles wish to leave behind the attractions of the world and choose to support the Holy Land in the habit of the Hospitallers, their charity grows cold toward the order. The pope desires the continual growth of the order, so he grants that they can establish unanimously and observe afterwards inviolably that the brother knights of their order shall wear a black mantle, so that they can be distinguished from the other brothers of the order. In battle or in war, however, they shall employ surcoats and other military coats of red and on which a white cross is sewn as on their standard, so that in such uniformity of signs the identity of souls is clear, and consequently the salvation of persons follows.

(Gerold, 1225-39) patriarch of Jerusalem and papal legate, acknowledges that the Hospitaller master has agreed that she should continue to hold this office for life, the monastery having been given to the Order by Pope Alexander IV.

text: August 1–31. Acre. Thomas Berardi, master of the knights of the Temple, addresses the Templar preceptor in Tuscany or his lieutenant. Thomas bishop of Bethlehem and papal legate in partibus cismarinis and Cardinal Hugo de Sancto Desiderio OP and many brothers of that order request in exchange a garden in Lucca adjacent to the Domincan convent. He is to use his discretion in complying with this request. A similar letter is addressed to Petrus Ferrandi, Templar preceptor in Italy. Both letters are transcribed in a vidimus of Henry bishop of Lucca dated 10 March 1260.

text: September 25. Anagni. Cardinal Stephen of Palestrina rules on a case involving the reluctance of the archbishop of Nicosia (archiepiscopus Nicosiensis) to contribute a tenth of his church’s income for 3 years to the support of the patriarch of Antioch and the fortification of Castrum Cursarii, as granted by Pope Innocent IV. Of the commissioners, the archbishop of Nicosia (archiepiscopus Nicosiensis) and the archbishop of Caesarea (archiepiscopus Cesariensis), the latter had transferred his authority to the archbishop of Mamistra (Mamistranus archiepiscopus), who excommunicated the archbishop of Nicosia (archiepiscopus Nicosiensis). The cardinal rules that the archbishop of Caesarea (archiepiscopus Cesariensis) had no authority to pass his rights on to the archbishop of Mamistra (Mamistranus archiepiscopus) and that the excommunication was therefore invalid.
