text: . January 11. Perugia. Pope Innocent III writes to the bishop of Lydda (Liddensis) and the bishop-elect of Bethlehem (Bethlemitanus), relating that he was informed on behalf of the bishop and chapter of Hebron (Ebronenses) that many of the goods of the church of Hebron (Ebronensis) have been illicitly alienated and taken away, to he orders the addressees to recall what has been alienated or taken away to the right and property of that church, notwithstanding any possessions, instruments, or letters granted to any persons, or punishments, oaths, or confirmations obtained from the Apostolic See in common form and the constitution De duabus dietis, as long as the other side is not drawn more than three or four days away from their diocese for trial, forcing those who contradict with ecclesiastical censure. One can carry it out if both cannot.

Pope Innocent IV writes to the archdeacon of Aunis and the archpriest of Jarnac on the Charente in the diocese of Saintes, ordering them to have Elias de Chanalibus, treasurer of Famagusta, received as canon and brother in the church of St Peter of Angoulême and provided with a prebend, if one is vacant, or as soon as one becomes so.

Pope Innocent IV writes to the dean of Sidon, granting that, aside from his rank as dean of Sidon, which has cure of souls, he can receive and keep one other ecclesiastical benefice, post, rank (beneficium sive personatum vel dignitatem) or church with pastoral care in Outremer, if offered to him canonically.

Pope Innocent IV writes to Archbishop [Henry], Archdeacon G (William?), Prior [Peter] and the chapter of Nazareth, relating that he was told on their behalf that for the honour of their church and the increase in divine worship they unanimously and harmoniously established that from now on there shall be a prior in the church; that a chapter of only six canons following the rule of St Augustine shall live together and serve in the church (in which no number of canons following that rule was established before); that the canons shall eat in one refectory and sleep in the same dormitory along with the prior; that the casal called Ilut (Aylot) of the church of Nazareth shall be assigned to the prior and canons with certain revenues in wheat, barley, wine, oil, money and some other things in common with the archdeaconate of that church, which has been newly created; that nevertheless it is expressed in these statutes that a secular cleric will always be taken for the archdeaconate; and some other healthy and honest statutes, as contained in the letter drawn up for this, which the pope inserts verbatim (see RRR 2834, September 1251). Responding to their entreaties, the pope ratifies the statutes, confirms them on apostolic authority and strengthens them with this letter, threatening all in case of violation.

Pope Innocent IV writes to the patriarch of Jerusalem (Robert de Nantes), relating that he has confirmed the statutes negotiated [in September 1251] between Archbishop [Henry], on the one hand, and the prior and the chapter of Nazareth, on the other. The pope orders the patriarch not to allow the archbishop, archdeacon, prior and chapter to be harassed over the above.

[Cardinal-]bishop of Albano Pierre [de Colmieu] writes to the priest Brother John, canon of Episcopia (i.e. Bellapais) of the Order of St Augustine in the diocese of Nicosia, relating that the pope was told on the addressee’s behalf that, when he was of a young age, he promised a certain sum of money to a cleric of a certain bishop so that he would be promoted to all holy orders, and finally, when the money was paid, he was so promoted. Eventually, having taken a religious habit, because of his conscience he voluntarily ceased administering in those orders for fourteen years, and asked to be provided for. The cardinal, to whom the pope assigned the case, grants John a dispensation so that he can administer in those orders while in the religious habit.

Pope Innocent IV writes to [cardinal-]bishop of Tusculum (Frascati) and papal legate [Eudes de Châteauroux], relating that the knight Guglielmo Tosetti (Tossitum), citizen of Genoa and relative and familiar of the pope, explained in the pope’s presence that, in answer to the pope’s prayers, King [Henry I] of Cyprus knighted and enfeoffed him, as befits the knight of such an excellent king and the honour of royal knighthood. Then after the death of Guglielmo’s wife, whom he had married on the orders of the same king, the king less fittingly despoiled him of the aforesaid fief and other things that the knight held in the kingdom, although he had done nothing to merit the loss of the royal benefice. Therefore the pope orders the legate to intercede on the knight’s behalf and warn and induce the king, out of reverence for the pope and the Apostolic See, to restore to the knight the fief and other things that the king is known to have taken and otherwise to treat him with affection as his knight. If the legate’s warning does not work, since the pope cannot and must not leave the knight without justice, however much the pope wants to defer to the king’s honour, the legate is to have justice shown to the knight concerning the fief and other things.

Pope Innocent IV writes to the clergy of the city and diocese of Limassol, relating that since the provision of the church of Limassol devolved on him because it had been vacant for a long time, the pope appointed as bishop and pastor of the church of Limassol Bartolomeo [de Braganza] of the Order of Preachers, then papal chaplain and penitentiary and also regent [master] in the theology faculty at the papal curia, a famous, learned, honest, and mature man. The pope orders the Limassol clergy to receive him as father and pastor and to show him fitting obedience and reverence, observing his warnings and mandates devoutly and humbly.
