Insights

The charts under Research draw the corpus. These are findings about it — each a short claim with the evidence behind it, computed from the same index at the moment you load the page. They are observations about the edition and its vocabulary, not arguments about the history of the Latin East, and each says what it cannot establish.

The same party is often recorded under more than one name

The Regesta keeps no authority file, so a party is identified by exactly the words an editor wrote. Across 1,725 distinct party names, 126 shorter names appear verbatim inside longer ones — 401 such pairings in all. Almost always these are the same figure recorded at different lengths.

One row per shorter name. Longer forms counts how many distinct compound names contain it; their entries is the weight a reconciliation would consolidate onto it. Ranked by that weight, so the top of this table is the editor's worklist.

Click a column heading to sort. Every name links into the database search — which matches partial text, so a compound name will also pull in the entries of the shorter form inside it.

What this does not show. Containment is a candidate test, not a verdict. A compound party naming several people is not the same actor as one of them alone, and only an editor can decide which pairs are genuinely the same figure. Nothing here has been merged.
